The City of Jonesboro, JPD, and Craighead County NAACP will be hosting a community prayer in response to last weekends shooting.
In response to this past weekend's shooting, the Craighead County NAACP is teaming up with the City of Jonesboro and JPD for a community prayer event.
Shamal Carter, the president of the Craighead County NAACP, said he’s had many meetings with community leaders. “In all honesty, it came together because I’ve had a meeting with Chief Elliot and Mayor Copenhaver and we really feel like we have to promote God in our community more than anything,” Carter said.
Carter, as well as the mayor and police chief, will be speaking and will be surrounded by local religious leaders. “A lot of pastors here in Jonesboro and a lot of pastors from different denominations, different races, they were all-in because we’re all focused on our city,” Carter said. Carter said that comments made on posts showed a rift within the community. “We have to unify our community, and what better way to unify than with God, and we’re not making it a black thing or a white thing but we’re making it about our community,” Carter said.
It is not just the deadly shooting that prompts this event, but the state of things as a whole. “We’ve had over 34 overdoses that were related to fentanyl since January, so yes this shooting is tragic but God is needed in our community beyond that,” Carter said.Connect with Us:
