Community members decry death of woman shot by deputies, police in Little Italy [Breaking]

About 40 community members on Sunday decried the death of a woman who was shot last month at her Little Italy condominium by sheriff’s deputies and a police officer.

The series of events began after a deputy showed up at her home to deliver an eviction notice. The incident escalated when the deputy noticed she was holding the knife, although she did not threaten him with it, according to body-camera video. “This is about an institution that has proven itself incapable of de-escalation,” said Stacey Uy of the Asian Solidarity Collective. She questioned why armed law enforcement officers — in San Diego County, it’s deputies — are tasked with serving eviction notices.

Julia Yoo, president of the National Police Accountability Project and a longtime civil rights attorney, told the Union-Tribune that officers and deputies would have needed a warrant to make an arrest on those grounds. Meanwhile, several policing experts who viewed the body-camera video of the incident have criticized the tactics deputies and officers used to try to detain Li.
