Communities outside of Columbus also seeing uptick in homicides, gun violence

Police said much of the problem is with young people getting firearms.

Mansfield police investigated five homicides last year. So far in 2023 the department has already had to investigate six. While the city of Columbus deals with a murder rate outpacing previous years, it’s not the only central Ohio community dealing with the gun violence problem.

In 2022, Mansfield Police investigated five homicides. This year so far, there have been six, including three in one week last month and a double shooting last week that left one person dead and another gravely injured.Jason Bammann, assistant chief for Mansfield Police, said kids are stealing guns. Aurelio Diaz, a community activist and city councilman, says the teenaged population in the city is underserved, with little programming, few activities, and no city pool.

Diaz said he’s working with community groups, and the city is hoping to build a community center for youth.
