The fight over the future of higher education here in Ohio is happening at the statehouse.
Thousands of people have been speaking out against the "Advance Ohio Higher Education Act. More than 800 people submitted written testimony against Senate Bill 1. A little over 200 spoke in person Tuesday night."People are going to avoid those subjects altogether. They're not going to want to try to navigate icy waters, and what does the government say is ok to say in a classroom," one speaker said.
It would get rid of mandatory diversity, equity and inclusion programs, stop staff from striking, and make it easier to fire poorly performing tenured professors. Senator Jerry Cirino, who introduced the bill and is on the higher education committee, was actively engaging people who spoke.
