The Irving-based steelmaker is among companies expecting infrastructure spending to boom over the next five years.

The company and Gov. Jim Justice announced the project Thursday. Construction will start next year in Berkeley County and the steel mill is expected to begin operations in 2025. Commercial Metals’ mills use electric energy and 100% recycled scrap to produce their products. The West Virginia mill will recycle more than 19 billion pounds of metal yearly.“We believe this new micro mill, among the most environmentally friendly steelmaking operations in the world, will strengthen our operational network throughout the Eastern U.S.,” said CEO Barbara R. Smith in a statement. The location will serve key metro markets in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Midwest.
The company said in January that it was considering several sites for a new micro mill to mainly serve the East Coast and Midwest regions where infrastructure spending is projected to boom. The Biden administration’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure plan — with about half going to rebuild roads and bridges — is expected to create a flurry of construction activity over the next five years.
