A commercial fisherman in San Francisco was caught with unlawfully caught fish, including salmon and halibut, hidden behind a false wall on their boat. The CDFW seized the fish and is pursuing legal action against the fisherman.
A commercial fisherman could face serious consequences after authorities discovered unlawfully caught fish hidden behind a false wall on their boat at San Francisco's Pier 45, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The CDFW reported that a fisherman arrived at Pier 45 with a concealed wall on their vessel. Behind the wall, officers found fillets of salmon, a species that has been illegal to fish in the area since 2023 due to declining populations.
Authorities observed the boat owner unloading several burlap sacks containing fish into their vehicle. This individual was later found at a restaurant where the CDFW alleges they attempted to conceal and sell the fish. The owner was found to be in possession of halibut, salmon, sole, and sanddabs, none of which had been declared as commercial catch for retail sale. A significant haul of 2,365 pounds of halibut was also seized by authorities. This seized fish was subsequently sold by the CDFW, with the proceeds donated to the Fish and Game Preservation fund. The CDFW states that a formal complaint has been filed with the San Francisco District Attorney's Office.
