'Ferrari is looking forward to a memorable weekend in Miami, hosting several activities linked to the marque’s tradition and passion for innovation in this its seventieth year on the North American market.
JON JOHNSON The mascot T-Roy roamed around within Buffalo Wild Wings on Monday night, taking it all in with other Troy supporters as head football coach Gerad Parker, head men’s basketball coach Scott Cross, head women’s basketball coach Chanda Rigby and athletics director Brent Jones mingled within the festive crowd as part of the annual Trojan Tour event in Dothan.
There is plenty of reason for loyal fans to be excited about what’s going within athletics on campus, which includes Troy hosting Alabama in baseball on Tuesday night at renovated Riddle-Pace Field with a 6 p.m. start. “First time that I can remember that we’ve ever had a hard sellout for Troy University baseball,” Jones said of the game. “We’re going to have a re-dedication to Riddle-Pace Field before the game with a flyover prior to it as well. “Our baseball team is red hot winning five of the last six games against Top 25 opponents , so I think this couldn’t come at a better time.” People are also reading… It was announced earlier Monday that Troy was selected to host the Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship next spring. “It’s huge for several reasons,” Jones said. “For one, we feel like it gives our team the best chance to succeed and win. It really showcases Troy University and Troy athletics, Pike County, the River Region, the Wiregrass … it’s a really cool thing to have. “You can’t just host because you want to host. You have to be able to host because your facilities are superior, and that’s what we have. It’s the second time in five years that we’ve been able to have this.” The following are some comments from the Troy coaches in attendance Monday during interview sessions before the program began. Football coach Parker on his biggest takeaway from his first spring as head coach: “I think for me, I felt like we did a really good job of our staff connecting to our players and vice-versa, which is critical when you add as much new as we’ve had and our staffs are all brand new. And oh by the way, you have three new playbooks between defense, special teams and offense. There is so much in year one to get covered, and to have covered all of that … to have embraced each other and connected with each other as we have … I think that’s my takeaway. "I feel like we walked away from this with this huge base layer, if you will, of what our expectations are in new systems that are going to give guys momentum going into summer and fall camp that allows us now to say, ‘OK, we’ve done this. We’ve done this drill, we’ve done this play, we’ve done this section of practice.’ We’re just going to be way more efficient.” Parker on recently getting transfer quarterback, Auburn High 2020 graduate Matthew Caldwell, from Gardner-Webb: “He brings us experience in playing in college football games. He’s from the state of Alabama and knows the expectations and the history of Troy. A guy with some experience in a very thin room, like we know, was very critical for us to get someone, and what better than to get someone from the state that knows Troy. As far as who he is as a player, we’ll see that when he gets here.” Men’s basketball coach Cross on keeping roster almost fully intact after losing just three seniors: “I think getting Jackson locked in all the way where he was sure. I think Jackson is kind of the leader in terms of relationships with the players. For guys that maybe were on the fence, once he was 100 percent all the way in, I think that probably helped keep the other guys locked in. "Obviously, Myles , I’m sure there were people that were messing with him being Freshman of the Year, and Tayton being Newcomer of the Year. I know people were tampering with them. So, I think Myles saw the success that he had and his brother plays here. I’m sure he did get better and develop. Same thing with Tayton. He had a great year. "The guys start looking around and see all the other guys in the portal and think, ‘Man, if we can just stick together, we could have a really great year.’ I think that may have become the conversation a little bit with them.” Cross on coaching his son, Austin, who committed to play for the Trojans after a year at Florida Coastal Prep Sports Academy: “I think Austin knows if he’s here, I’m going to be on his butt to play defense, so he’s going to get better defensively. And then, he can look and say, ‘I’ve got coach Lewis I’m going to work with every day, coach Young, coach Worley, coach Gilbert, coach Cordaro' and myself, so he’s going to get better. "He likes it here. It’s probably a little bit of pressure being coach’s son, but it’s not like we have to have him play any amount of minutes this year. We’ve got 10 guys returning, so there’s no pressure whatsoever on him. It could just be a year where he really, really develops his game.” Women’s basketball coach Chanda Rigby on making the semifinals of the WNIT tournament: “It helped us in almost every way. First of all, it would have been so sad for those four seniors, who averaged 15 points apiece, to have left on the note that we left the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in . It wasn’t good, right? "Then we got the opportunity to go to the WNIT and we played some of our best basketball, and the fans were amazing and came out and supported us. It was like a lifetime memory." On playing on national TV at home in the semifinals against Minnesota: “We were the only one on TV that night. We literally got two really good commitments without even a visit. It was so loud in there at times and we looked in the stands and everyone was standing up … it almost scared us at times … we were like, ‘Whoa, they’re doing that for us.’”
