My supervisors told me to keep quiet and be satisfied that I got the job.
Early in my career, I was awarded a Ford Foundation Chicano Postdoctoral Fellowship. I was told by my supervisor to decline this award because there were white professors at the college who couldn’t compete for the grant and that was not fair to them.
When white administrators assign faculty of color additional duties to recruit students of color and to be the “go-to person” for students with problems, it adds more burden. The additional workload often has a negative impact on tenure, promotion and raises for faculty of color because often we are not be able to devote as much time to teaching and research as some white faculty.
