Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and Democrat Beto O’Rourke are seeking to build on a strong Texas economy, but with markedly different economic visions and priorities.Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott faces Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke this election. Much divides the candidates, but both would clearly like to run on the prospects of improved economic performance.
As the U.S. seeks to repatriate supply chains to North America, the importance of Texas-Mexico trade will increase. Finding workable accommodations with Mexico will encourage cross-border trade and bring supply chain networks closer to home — making them more reliable and less subject to international disruptions.
Some issues will favor O’Rourke. Criticisms of how the Texas electric grid is managed tend to hit home. Even after Winter Storm Uri last year, electric reliability has remained in question throughout the summer months. Keeping the lights on — whether in a residence or a business — hits home like few other issues. How utilities are managed — the basis for modern life — may fall under greater scrutiny in the years ahead if reliability again comes into question.
Perhaps the issue most likely to polarize the electorate and the candidates this fall is abortion rights — even though it is ostensibly a social issue. Aside from the overwhelming statewide support for a woman’s right to choose, the issue could spill over into the economic realm by causing companies and other organizations to reconsider decisions about whether to relocate to Texas.
