— an ambiguity in federal law that allows dating partners convicted of domestic abuse to have access to firearms — that wrath can turn deadly on a dime.

There is no reason why abusive dating partners should be treated any differently under federal law than abusive spouses. My partner and I share my two daughters and his son, and like many couples, we don’t have plans to marry anytime soon. Marital status doesn’t define how real a relationship is, and it doesn’t dictate how safe a person is inside of one. People in dangerous relationships like Melissa’s cannot wait any longer.

The commonsense gun safety policies within this framework could be the difference between life and death for people fighting to stay safe in abusive relationships or dangerous home environments. The framework is a critical start, and the Senate must do everything in its power to get it passed into law — in its entirety. We thank Sen. John Cornyn forthis far by balancing the need for action with respect for the Second Amendment.

We have been waiting for federal action on gun safety for decades. We cannot let our lawmakers ignore the cries of gun violence survivors like me. We cannot let lawmakers ignore the voices of responsible gun owners like my family and the thousands of others like us who are fighting for safety across the nation. We cannot let them look away from this country’s gun violence crisis.

Sen. Cornyn, Texans are counting on you. Survivors are counting on you. Responsible gun owners are counting on you. My family is counting on you. Please, for the sake of the motherless children and the mourning families in Texas, keep doing everything you can to pass this bipartisan framework into law and address the boyfriend loophole. We must put these children, and those at risk of joining this growing list, at the forefront of this discussion. Please do not let this opportunity slip away.
