Washington (3-4) struggled mightily in the first half of Sunday’s game and was never able to dig out of the 14-0 halftime deficit against the Giants.
Commanders quarterback Sam Howell leaves the field following Washington's loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium Sunday. Outside of their punter, the Washington Commanders had little else here Sunday in a 14-7 loss to the New York Giants that made a team that started the day 1-5, with a decimated offensive line and an injured starting quarterback, look like a Super Bowl contender.
“They gave us some looks, but they weren’t any looks that we don’t know the answers to,” Howell said. “It was just more of a matter of just executing.” He caught a 27-yard pass in the third quarter that was padded with a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on cornerback Deonte Banks. McLaurin bounced up from the tough hit. Two plays later, with only seven seconds left in the quarter, he hauled in a 31-yard catch on a third-and-nine. It was Washington’s first third-down conversion in 13 attempts.“I trust myself winning down the field,” McLaurin said. “I think that’s a strength in my game.
“I don’t know if the ball got tipped or something,” Howell said. “I just feel like the ball didn’t go as far as I was trying to throw it, so it was just a bad play on me. I thought decision-making wise, it was fine. Just got to throw the ball a little .”Two plays later, Saquon Barkley caught a short pass and took it 32 yards for a touchdown, forcing missed tackles by Washington defenders en route.
