REGISTRATION of Filipino voters in Israel will be suspended indefinitely pending the resolution of the Israel-Palestine conflict, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said on Tuesday that he would bring up the matter during the Commission En Banc's regular session on Wednesday for approval.'We wanted to ensure the safety of our kababayan in Israel,' Garcia said.Garcia said that overseas registration in Israel would only resume once the situation has stabilized.Garcia said the overseas voting registration started last December and would end next year or for a period of two years.
The Comelec did not cite the exact figure on the number of Filipino migrant workers as registration is still ongoing in other areas around the world.Based on the last elections, Comelec records showed that there was a total of 1,697,215 registered overseas Filipino voters.There are 92 Philippine posts, embassies and consulates in the Asia Pacific Region, Europe, Middle East and Africa, and the Americas.
