Ukrainian voters appear set to elect young comedian Zelensky as its new president in Sunday’s election, in a stinging rebuke to the incumbent leader Poroshenko

A member of a local electoral commission takes part in preparations for the upcoming presidential election at a polling station in Kiev, Ukraine April 20, 2019.

His victory would open a new chapter in the history of a country that has gone through two popular uprisings in two decades and is mired in a five-year conflict with Moscow-backed insurgents in the east.Despite mounting uncertainty Ukrainians are fed up with corruption, poverty, and the war that has claimed some 13,000 lives over the past five years.

Zelensky has capitalised on popular anger as well as his popularity as the star of the sitcom "Servant of the People", in which he plays a school teacher who becomes a president. "There is not a single person who would not be discussing the situation in the country," said Oleg Chaban.Poroshenko, 53, has fought hard to secure re-election but his pleas to forgive him for past mistakes and give him a second chance have fallen on deaf ears.
