Despite the benefits of personalized medicine and combined clinics for treating psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, several challenges hinder their widespread implementation. These include physical limitations like space constraints, logistical issues related to scheduling and patient flow, and reimbursement disparities between dermatologists and rheumatologists.
— a concept known as combined clinics — has been around for more than a decade, and the idea of personalized medicine for these patients even longer than that, yet both approaches to care have encountered a host of obstacles, a longtime research rheumatologist said.
To overcome these challenges, different models have emerged, Gladman said. If space allows, the ideal model is to have both specialties in one clinic, she said, while compensating for the different pace at which dermatologists and rheumatologists see patients. Whatever combined clinic model a center chooses, clinicians must be mindful of preventing patients from falling through the cracks, Gladman said.
Besides that, identifying biomarkers is key to advancing personalized medicine for psoriasis, Gladman noted.
