Combating the Clear Fire: a look at the challenges in utilizing aircraft.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Clear fire began on June 21, and has since grown to 51,236 acres. However with the fire wedged between the Teklanika river and the community of Anderson and Clear Space Force Station, the response to the blaze has been massive.
Vital resources the teams have focused on include but are not limited to “water, food and fuel” as Williams put it. The biggest issue is that without aerial support, the resources to fight the flames cannot be brought out to the people on the fireline. Due to the reliance on aircraft, the ongoing effort to protect the community has seen some struggle as the smoke has been too dense for aircraft to fly. All of the air resources being used to suppress the fire require one mile of visibility before they can lift off and carry out their missions. But the smoke has been dense enough to prevent that for multiple days at a time since the start of the burn.
