Hesed House Executive Director Joe Jackson describes homelessness as a 'dire situation,' but vows to 'do all we can' to continue fighting this growing problem.
Joe Jackson has to have one of the toughest jobs in Aurora. That’s because, “when we fight a losing battle, people die,” insists the executive director of Hesed House homeless shelter. That reality hit home a few weeks ago when a 69-year-old woman, who was turned away from the Aurora shelter because it was filled to legal capacity, was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in the early hours of Sept. 27 while walking on Galena Boulevard just west of Barnes Road.
Jackson, of course, can’t help but wonder how the situation would have unfolded had phase two of a major renovation project in the 40,000-square-foot building directly across from the original Hesed House facility not been sidelined for 18 months by red tape. Hesed House will soon begin phase two of a major construction project across River Street from the original shelter in Aurora. The project was delayed for 18 months because of red tape, says Hesed House Executive Director Joe Jackson.
