If school officials are concerned about safety in the community, so should city officials. Instead, members of the City Council quibble over meetings without quorums and study parking proposals in-depth. And debate parades.

If officials want to entice the Chicago Bears to move to Waukegan, bring developers to rouse the city’s dormant Lake Michigan shoreline, and lure entrepreneurs to stimulate and refurbish the downtown, they need to get a handle on the string of attacks the past month. Such gun violence does nothing to boost the city’s image across the region.

A gun and shell casings of different calibers were found at the scene. A 22-year-old man reportedly suffered a gunshot graze wound to the head. Police said a nearby home and a car parked on the street were also damaged by bullets, which were of different calibers. Both remain under investigation. A suspect is in custody, charged with the two deaths. City police described the incident as domestic-related.The Zion resident, 60 years old, died in hospital after he was shot multiple times on the night of Aug. 18 in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the city’s far North Side. That death remains under investigation.
