The five-time champion shoots 1-under 71 but the hard part comes next: doing it again
The rain started Tuesday afternoon, one band of thunderstorms after another soaking eastern Georgia and closing Augusta National for the remainder of the day.
Then a man in a green jacket slid a white placard with black lettering into a sign signifying who was next on the tee box at the first hole: Tiger Woods. “Fore please,” the man in the green jacket announced, the traditional Masters introduction, his voice tinged with a mix of incredulity and anticipation. “Now driving … Tiger Woods.”A clubhead whipped above the crowd, then disappeared. A white orb rocketed toward the horizon.
After explaining Tuesday that he wouldn’t play if he didn’t think he could win, Woods was asked if he thought he could win. “I do,” he said.As Woods met with the media near the 18th green, you could hear Augusta National’s complex network of SubAir filters humming, pumping air underneath greens and fairways, whisking away water to dry out the course. By the time he tees off Friday afternoon, it could be a completely different course from Thursday’s soggy slog.
