HBO's 'Real Sports' is ending after 29 seasons. The network also just canceled 'Winning Time.' What's left for the casual viewer?
Bryant Gumbel hosts “Real Sports,” the HBO newsmagazine that will end its run after 29 years on the air.
When it comes to sports, HBO is pivoting away from long-form journalism and scripted efforts and instead adding a sports tier to its streaming platform. For an extra $9.99 a month, subscribers to Max will get access to pro basketball, baseball and hockey games, plus the NCAA March Madness tournament.I’ve no doubt that’s a worthwhile expense to fans with a vested interest in specific leagues or teams.
I’ve wondered how a show like “Real Sports” managed to stick around for so long. Its “60 Minutes”-style of reporting — stiff and lacking complexity — has felt dated for most of its 29 years. There was a recent episode about dogs and sports. I’ll watch anything about dogs. And yet it felt like the show had truly run out of gas, ending with host Bryant Gumbel and the show’s correspondents sitting in the studio with their dogs and awkwardly talking about why they all like … dogs.
