Lively crowds of more than 5,000 spur first-year club, which will move to bigger stadium in Mission Valley in September

More energy, more noise, more palpable enthusiasm — that’s the Wave ticket. The smallest home in the 12-club National Women’s Soccer League, Torero Stadium promotes an intimate vibe.

“It’s like a cauldron in here,” said coach Casey Stoney, whose club will return there at 2 p.m. Sunday against Seattle’s OL Reign. “We love playing here. We love it because of our home fans.” True to goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan’s forecast, the Wave, going into their toughest home test yet, are unbeaten in three in-season games at USD. Preseason matches there led the fifth-year NWSL player to wax about a “San Diego spirit” inside the cozy ballpark.“We know that’s going to hurt other teams coming here, having this atmosphere,” said Sheridan, a crowd favorite.

Count the USD campus’ elevated perch and proximity to ocean breezes an asset, too. Cooler weather refreshes soccer players, said Kornieck, a Las Vegas product who played for the San Diego Surf in 2014-16 at the coastal Del Mar polo fields where the Wave train. “I don’t want the Vegas heat here,” she said.

The Wave’s USD party runs six more games, finishing with three straight in August. Their final two home games, Sept. 17 and 30, will be played in east Mission Valley.
