Padres closer Hader, who hit rock bottom after the trade deadline, has become nearly unhittible this postseason

In the hallway leading to the visiting clubhouse at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday, Padres closer Josh Hader quietly walked through the ways he became Josh Hader again.“There’s no alternative, right?” Hader said. “The only alternative is to quit. That’s not in my regimen, vocab or anything like that. We work too hard to play this game day in and day out to just give up because you’re struggling.”And wow, was Hader struggling.

“It catches up with everyone at one point or another, to go from being the best closing arm in baseball to not being able to get out of a single inning,” Padres’ Game 3 starter Joe Musgrove said. “It was tough to watch for him. “Obviously adrenaline, right?” Hader began. “That’s one of the big things. It’s also the buildup of arm care I’ve done over the years, strengthening my arm. And I’m getting back to the sound mechanics that make me who I am.

“At the time, I was getting super rotational, getting on my toe to where it led to the inconsistent drive and push off the mound, off the rubber. When you have inconsistencies like that, the upper half has to figure out and compensate.”The Phillies understand the fresh challenge.
