“I’m a huge Padres fan,” Olave was saying Thursday at Mission Hills High in San Marcos. “They’re going to do a lot. I can’t wait to see them in the playoffs. It’s gonna be fun.”Bored as a boy on the baseball field, where he played center field, shortstop and second base, Olave said he gave up playing the sport at age 12.

Olave sat out his junior year with Mission Hills after transferring from Chula Vista’s Eastlake High. “My diet was so crazy at Ohio State,” he said. “Fast food. McDonald’s. Wendy’s. Pizza — a whole of pizza. A lot of pasta.”
