Column: Death of Foo Fighters’ drummer, Taylor Hawkins, prompts memories of Kurt Cobain’s suicide note, writes columnist Jerry Davich.

“Upon first meeting, our bond was immediate, and we grew closer with every day, every song, every note that we ever played together,” wrote Grohl, the Foo Fighters’ founder and frontman. “We are absolutely meant to be, and I am grateful that we found each other in this lifetime.” Grohl thought he was kidding. He and Cobain lived together, rehearsed together, performed together and bonded together, musically and sonically. Cobain struggled with drug use and emotional demons, overdosing multiple times before taking his own life in April 1994.
Cobain joined the now-known “27 Club” for dead rock ‘n’ roll icons — Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones and Jim Morrison. I wrote how tragic yet predictable Cobain’s death appeared to be, transforming his mortal life into eternal legend with the squeeze of a trigger. It’s “better to burn out than to fade away,” Cobain wrote in his suicide note, quoting a Neil Young lyric.
