La Jolla Country Day star and former Cubs infielder on a minor-league deal with Padres hopes to break through in 2023

In the Padres clubhouse at the Peoria Sports Complex, Alfonso Rivas explained the extremely limited group to which he belongs.Rivas is a professional baseball player who was born on the side of a freeway — on Interstate 805 in San Diego, to be exact. He stormed into this world in the back seat of a Grand Marquis on Sept. 13, 1996. His best guess: It all began somewhere near the University Avenue exit, though his parents have not told him the exact spot.

“I’m just excited to play my game,” he said. “Whatever happens at the end, I’m going to keep doing me.” Rivas returned to Chula Vista from Tijuana in fourth grade. That set up his next San Diego challenge, though far safer, when he attended La Jolla Country Day. Rivas, a two-time All-CIF and All-Academic pick, joined the baseball program at the University of Arizona. He twice was named to the all-Pac 12 first team and led the Wildcats with a .347 average as a senior in 2018.“I was staying at the hotel across the street ,” Rivas recalled “It was 1 in the morning. We had a game the next day. Honestly, I was asleep.
