NJ/NY Gotham FC taps into popularity U.S. national team star, perhaps contributing to club-record ticket sales.
Against NJ/NY Gotham FC last year, the Wave star rang up six goals total in a pair of lopsided victories. Choosing not to hold it against Morgan, the East Coast club decided to tap into her popularity ahead of Sunday’s return visit.

Doing their part to attract fans in Greater New York City, where the Jets and Knicks have hogged a generation of fans who’ll support ineptitude, Gotham players — led by striker Lynn Williams — have moved the club atop the 12-club National Women’s Soccer League standings. If there’s one woman who can attract soccer fans on both the West Coast and the East Coast and vast stretches in between, here’s guessing it’s a two-time World Cup champion whose Instagram account boasts 10 million followers. The Wave know how they lucky were to attract Morgan when they launched the franchise. Now they’re reaping a Women’s World Cup dividend. Their matches enable U.S. fans to see Morgan and other national team players such as Wave defender Naomi Girma before they head to Australia and New Zealand next month. Between the U.S. team and a third consecutive Women’s World Cup title stand several countries who Morgan said in March profile as more formidable than the fields four years and eight year ago, in France and Canada, respectively. Americans in large numbers will tune in. The 2015 World Cup Final, played in Canada, drew 25.4 million viewers in the United States, per Fox Sports. Approximately 14.3 million U.S. viewers tuned into the 2019 World Cup Final telecast from France, as compared to 11.4 million for the 2018 men’s World Cup Final. Morgan made one visit to greater New York last season, scoring twice in the Wave’s 3-0 win. The announced turnout of 7,145 was about double Gotham’s crowds for seven of the club’s other 13 home matches. The Wave sit one point behind Gotham in the crowded standings. Coach Casey Stoney held Morgan out of Wednesday’s 3-0 homefield loss to Seattle’s OL Reign in the Challenge Cup. She played all 90 minutes last Friday in a 1-1 tie against Portland.
