The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has launched a new Career Pathways Program in partnership with Columbus City Schools (CCS). Funded by Battelle, this initiative aims to provide CCS students with real-world work experience in skilled trades while exploring diverse career opportunities at the Zoo. Starting January 27th and running through March 10th, seven students from Fort Hayes Career Center will work alongside experts in the Zoo's maintenance and landscape teams.
Participants will gain hands-on experience in carpentry, HVAC, electrical work, and landscaping, understanding the vital roles these skills play in supporting wildlife conservation. Students will work on a rotating week-on, week-off schedule, with the option to extend their internship throughout the school year. 'At the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, we believe in inspiring future generations—not only to care about wildlife and conservation but also to explore career paths they may not have considered before,' said Eli de Nijs, Schools Educator for the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. 'Through this new partnership with Columbus City Schools, we are excited to provide students with immersive experiences that highlight the many ways their skills can contribute to the Zoo’s mission of Empowering People. Saving Wildlife.'This program is part of a larger effort to connect students with meaningful career pathways and builds on previous collaborations between the Columbus Zoo and Columbus City Schools. Through the Teaching Academy, CCS students interested in education careers have partnered with Zoo educators to develop and lead field trip activity stations, gaining valuable experience in environmental education. 'Columbus City Schools is thrilled about the opportunity for our Ft Hayes Career Center students to engage in paid work-based learning at the Columbus Zoo. This partnership allows our students to gain invaluable experience in roles such as Carpenter Maintenance, Electrician Maintenance, HVAC and Landscaping Maintenance,' said Jenny Meade, Director of Career-Technical Education. 'These hands-on opportunities not only enhance their resumes but also prepare them for successful careers. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Becky Nellis, Eli de Nijs, and the entire Columbus Zoo staff for making this incredible opportunity possible.” With the success of this pilot program, the Columbus Zoo plans to expand work-based learning opportunities into additional departments, creating more pathways for students to develop skills for future careers
