Columbus Water & Power adds safeguards to its Enhanced Meter Project after rare flooding incidents during installations in homes with older pipes.

Columbus Water & Power says it’s making changes to its Enhanced Meter Project after a few residents reported flooding during installation. Since 2023, the city has been working to replace more than 300,000 outdated water meters across Greater Columbus, aiming for better accuracy and efficiency.

So far, about 90,000 have been replaced, including over 53,000 by installation partner VEPO — with a 99.6% success rate and no complaints on most jobs.acknowledged concerns after some older pipes failed under the pressure of installation, causing water damage in a small number of homes. Ginther has directed VEPO to step up safeguards, including alerting residents to potential risks, taking extra precautions to prevent flooding, removing fragile items near work areas, and improving how damage complaints are handled. Additional security measures, such as frequent background checks for installers and expiring city badges after six months, will also be put in place. “I take all customer concerns seriously,” Ginther said, “and see them as an opportunity to improve our service.”
