Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther is praising the success of the "Non-Fatal Shooting Pilot Program" initiated by Columbus Police, which plans to expand it next year. Launched 18 months ago in the South Linden and Milo Grogan neighborhoods, the program aims to break the cycle of violence.
The program itself is the application of another pilot program for the homicide unit started in 2022.The program has significantly improved the city's rate for solving non-fatal shootings, with a total of 484 charges filed since its inception. "Our current city-wide rate for solving non-fatal shootings is about 46 percent. But in our pilot project, that rate is 75%," Ginther said. He emphasized that the program's impact goes beyond statistics, saying, "It's dozens of families getting justice and countless acts of retaliation prevented before they can happen." Police Chief Elaine Bryant explained the program's approach, noting that instead of two detectives working a case alone, an eight-officer team responds immediately. This team brings the same level of investigative expertise and urgency as they would to homicide cases. "The concept isn't about numbers, but about saving lives and making the community safer," Bryant said. She also said the program helps connect the dots across investigations, identifying suspects early and preventing retaliation by disrupting cycles of violence.Ginther credited the collaboration between officers and the community for creating a safer environment. He announced plans to expand the program to Zone 2 next spring, with the ultimate goal of implementing it citywide.A viral video showing a large group of teens fighting inside Easton Town Center over the weekend is prompting community leaders to speak out about youth behavioYou can call it an achievement in endurance, or just what someone is capable of with a little liquid courage.Either way, two Ohio State students are going viralNovember is diabetes awareness month and with the holidays right around the corner, it’s a crucial time for families to learn how to balance fun and food safelyThe decision by a handful of Senate Democrats has roiled the party and sparked fierce backlash against it for giving up the shutdown fight ahead of midterms. The end to the six-week government shutdown has divided Democrats and reignited frustration among the party’s base about its leadership.
