An Ohio State project is digitally recreating in 3D parts of neighborhoods wiped out when the interstate system was built through Columbus.
Hundreds of homes, some businesses and other buildings in Columbus were wiped out decades ago when crews built the interstates that sliced through the heart of the city.An Ohio State project now aims at rebuilding those neighborhoods — virtually, in 3D — so people can see what they looked like before homes and businesses were demolished.
The key to visualizing the neighborhoods, Miller said, are old Sanborn Fire Insurance maps, which were created starting in 1897, with the last edition of maps in 1961. They show the locations of buildings in Columbus and other cities, he said. Douglas said the freeway work did take her aunt's house. She said her aunt was able to build a house at the corner of Atcheson Street and Bassett Avenue on the Near East Side., a local historian, said she was unaware of the Ohio State project, but believes it is important because it visually explains the impact the freeways had on city neighborhoods.
In Detroit, for example, interstates gutted thriving Black neighborhoods and businesses, including popular entertainment and cultural areas. Hundreds of buildings were demolished and tens of thousands were displaced.
