As we approach the final hours of 2024, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther is sharing what the city has accomplished and some of the trials it has faced."We do know that the restoration and recovery efforts have come a long, long way," Ginther said "Over 93% of all of our systems have been restored. These investigations sometimes can take months, if not up to a year to complete. We're on track. We have experts that are helping with us.
Ginther said 21,000 people have signed up for the credit monitoring and protection program so far. Columbus residents can sign up through March."I am really, really proud of the Division of Police," Ginther said. "You know we had nearly a 20% reduction in homicides, a 27% reduction in felonious assaults, and our homicide solve rate is at 75%, and our closure rates are over 90%. This is the biggest drop in crime that we've seen since before the pandemic.
$774 million was dedicated to neighborhood safety, including three new police classes, which will add up to 180 new officers to the police force. The FOP has said the department is currently understaffed by 200 officers.
