Columbus residents' big blue city curbside recycling cans are typically bulging at the seams by the time the city gets around to emptying them every two weeks.
More than $2.1 million to reduce illegal dumping by expanding refuse collection to include hot-spot inspections; opening two convenience centers for residents to properly dispose of hard-to-recycle items, food and yard waste, hazardous waste and bulk items; and hiring more drivers for refuse trucks; But the net number of uniformed police will rise by 85, to 2,021 officers when “separations” are factored in, according to the 414-page budget document. Uniformed firefighters will rise by 66, to 1703.
The expansion from bi-weekly to weekly recycling pickup will work toward the city’s goal of further reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfills, increasing the amount of recyclables the city collects by up to 40%.
