The warming centers were originally going to be open through the end of February, but funding ended early when safety became an issue.
Two warming centers are currently open 24/7 with capacity — United Methodist Church, 501 E. Broad St. and Church and Community Development for All People, 946 Parsons Ave.
Mike Premo, the executive director of the United Methodist Church & Community Development for All People, is disappointed the city is closing the warming centers early.Church for All People provides people who stay at their warming center with a yoga mat, a blanket, a hot meal from Mid-Ohio Food Collective, a breakfast bar, coffee and a COTA bus pass day pass.
The South Side church caps the warming center at 80 people, which they consistently housed and often saw the same people come back night after night. “We really did hear from people a lot that this was the best place they ever stayed,” Premo said. “We pray that we don’t have dangerously cold temperatures for the remainder of this winter.”[email protected]
