HOUSTON, TX -DECEMBER 2: Columbus Ty’Vone Whitehead its tackled by Franklin’s Lucas Licecume (60 in the first quarter during a Region III-3A Division I championship game between Columbus and Franklin December 2, 2022 at Tomball ISD Stadium in Tomball, Texas. For the previous two seasons, defending 3A state champion Franklin has grown accustomed to comfortable leads and winning games in dominating fashion.
The Lions advance to their third consecutive state semifinal game in hopes of reaching Arlington and Cowboys Stadium again. They have played in the last two state title games and are looking to go back-to-back for the first time in program history. “In that situation, we’re going to put it in 15’s hands and I would do that 10 out of 10 times,” Fannin said. “That was a big-time play and we have a lot of good players who are focused right now with huge willingness to win.”
After a frustrating first possession for Franklin that stalled in part due to three uncharacteristic penalties, the Lions tied the score at 7 a minute into the second quarter. Jackson capped a 9-play, 67-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown run. Jackson carried most of the workload on the drive, rushing five times for 55 yards.
Columbus responded. Schobel hit Pitchford again, this time on a 4-yard pass to cut the lead to 17-14. On their next possession, the Cardinals drove to the Franklin 1-yard line and faced fourth down. That’s when Jackson, the durable sophomore, stopped JJ Hurd for a loss and the Lions’ lead remained at three.
