The Columbus Crew are gearing up for the 2023 season with a crucial change to their forward line. Head coach Wilfried Nancy confirmed the imminent trade of star forward Christian Ramirez to the LA Galaxy, marking a significant shift in the team's attacking strategy. While the Crew prepare to face the Chicago Fire in their season opener on February 22nd, they are actively working to fill the void left by Ramirez's departure. Nancy emphasized that the club has a plan in place to bring in new talent before the start of the season, ensuring a competitive attack.
The Columbus Crew announced they have agreed to a contract extension with head coach Wilfried Nancy on Wednesday. The Crew are currently training in Palm Beach, Florida, to prepare for their February 22nd season opener against the Chicago Fire — without two star forwards. ABC 6 confirmed a report from MLS Insider Tom Bogert that the Crew have agreed to trade Christian Ramirez to the LA Galaxy. Ramirez is a California native and the move brings him back to his home state.
'The plan hasn't changed, to be honest with you,' said Head Coach Wilfried Nancy. 'We try to think ahead about what can happen. When we have a player leave, no matter what is the position, we try to anticipate it. We have players we think about, depending on each position. It's the same mindset as the window in August or September. We are working on that. The plan was to bring , already, players so the idea is to the same.' The official announcement regarding Ramirez's trade is expected to come at any moment. When asked if the plan was to bring in players before the season, Nancy said, 'Yes.' Later in his Zoom press conference this afternoon, he added that he will also be leaning on club leadership to bring in the right fit. 'We have a plan,' insisted Nancy. 'If I'm not mistaken, most of the time, we get more players in the August window instead of this window. Freshness was the plan already, but with that, I wanted the front office to take their time to choose the right player. We can still have players. We're going to see what type of player that we want. If we don't find the player that we want, we'll wait for the next window.' The Crew currently have four forwards listed on their roster. Current players in black and gold will continue to step up and bolster the Crew's attack. 'Especially for our attacking group, we have young guys, Diego is an experienced guy, it's up to all of them to take advantage of the opportunities that they get and the chances that they get,' said Crew midfielder Darlington Nagbe. 'Everyone's been hungry. We know what's ahead of us considering the team that we are and what's expected of us.' The Crew are scheduled to play a friendly against Nashville SC on February 8th and remain training in Florida until the 15th. The team then returns to Columbus for final preparations ahead of their season opener at Lower.com Field
