In Wilfried Nancy's first game as the coach of the Crew, the Crew started strong but faltered in the second half against Philadelphia.
For much of the first half, the Crew looked like the superior team. Nancy's possession-based style was clicking, and the Crew's attack caused regular problems for the Union, which culminated in the Crew scoring the game's first goal. But after a penalty kick was awarded to Philadelphia at the conclusion of the first half, and the Union subsequently equalized the match after Daniel Gazdag converted on the penalty kick, the Union took control and cruised to a 4-1 win.
Winning this match was always going to be a challenge for the Crew; the Union haven't lost at Subaru Park in the regular season since Sept. 3, 2021 against New England, and fully implementing Nancy's style is going to take a bit of time. The promising start to the match offered a glimpse of where the Crew could be, but the second-half slide was a reminder that this is just the beginning of Nancy's project.
The Crew immediately went back on the attack after the opening goal, and carried the run of play until the late minutes of the first half. But in the 45th minute, defender Mo Farsi — making his first MLS start — was called for a handball inside the box, awarding a penalty kick to the Union.
Another penalty was awarded in the 72nd minute, and Gazdag converted again. Carranza put the final touch on the dominant win for Philadelphia with a goal in the 80th minute, finishing a touch from Joaquin Torres, who worked around center back Philip Quinton to create the space for the pass.
