The city of Columbus created a solar co-op to help homeowners afford solar panels.
Columbus wants to have 50 megawatts of rooftop solar by 2030, which would remove roughly 23,700 metric tons of carbon emissions, according to Sustainable Columbus. For context, Stratton’s H.W. Sammis coal plant produces 1500 megawatts and Ohio was responsible for more than 200 million tons of carbon emissions in 2018.
Solar United Neighbors hopes it can cut the sticker price between 15 and 20% through bulk purchasing.“There’s a lot of different factors to it,” Williams said. Williams had to battle with her homeowner’s association, who wanted her to put the panels on the rear of her house, where they would collect far less sunlight.State lawmakers have worked in recent months to clear hurdles for homeowners who want to install solar panels.
