The Columbus City School Board kicked off the new year with new leadership. Michael Cole, a longtime board member, takes over as president, and Jennifer Adair becomes the new vice president. Cole emphasized a focus on closing educational gaps, improving student outcomes, and strengthening board unity. The board also continues to evaluate school closures and mergers.
The board held its first meeting of 2025 Tuesday night, where it was announced Michael Cole, who has served on the board for over a decade, will take over as president, and Jennifer Adair will take over as the new vice president."We've made some considerable steps this year to rectify some things, figure out what board behavior should look like, how we can become stronger and better professionals," Cole said.
"At the end of the day, we want to make use of assets in a way that closes gaps for students and their families affordable housing there is a merit of things we can do to make the city stronger," Cole added.It got a two in the categories of achievement, progress, and gap closing and got a one star in graduation and early literacy."How do we apply to make sure we're graduating more students that we're passing more kids in early childhood that we expand in CTE space.
Tuesday night's first meeting of 2025 was brief, but Cole put an emphasis on having a stronger bond as a board. "You have to have the stamina and the patience, and I think that's where we can continue to work with each other." Former president Christina Vera says she wanted to take a personal step back from her role but will still serve as a board member.
