As Breast Cancer Awareness Month draws to a close, hundreds gathered in downtown Columbus for the American Cancer Society’sParticipants walked to raise funds for research and support programs, each with a personal story driving their steps.
"I am a 7-month triple-negative breast cancer survivor." Shanise Pearce, a breast cancer survivor said. "It’s very important for me to spread the message/"Cudlin walked not only for herself but also in honor of her grandmother and friends who are breast cancer survivors.Beth Gallam, who also survived breast cancer, emphasized the importance of early detection.
"I can openly talk about my journey, and if I can save one other life with early detection, I’m happy that I went through it," Gallam said. The event underscored the critical message of self-advocacy. Gallam advised, "Do self-exams. Request screenings if your family’s health history includes cancer." She credited early detection for her survival, saying, "I wouldn’t have found mine until I was thankfully stage one.""This event is so important because we celebrate survivorship. We are the village for people who don’t have it, for people who had it, and for people to know they can come to have somebody there for them as well," Pearce added.
