The Ivy League recently held its first 'Giving Day' fundraiser since the Oct. 7, 2023 invasion of Israel, according to campus newspaper The Columbia Spectator.
Pro-Palestinian protesters gather near an area where people were being taken into custody near the Columbia University campus in New York, Tuesday, April 30, 2024, after a campus encampment and a campus building, taken over by protesters earlier in the day, were cleared by New York City police.
The school’s "Giving Day" is an annual event held in October to support various campus programs, such as athletics and individual schools. While the university has seen a steady increase in "Giving Day" donations since its inaugural 2012 event, its 2024 donations are down 28.8%, the newspaper reported.
This year's "Giving Day" event was the first held since pro-Palestine protests and encampments occurred on Columbia's campus, as the Ivy League reportedly postponed last year's fundraiser in response to the Oct. 7 invasion of Israel. More than 200 people were arrested by the New York City Police Department earlier this year after officers conducted sweeps of campus encampments.
We can’t have this intimidation that’s filtering through all these colleges, and the hate, continue to grow and multiply the way it is,” he said. “We have hatred and intimidation taking over.”
