'The Zanclean megaflood was an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon dwarfing any other known floods in Earth's history,' an expert said.
The sunny Mediterranean Sea—today a very popular holiday destination—had a period long ago when it was an expansive salt flat, entirely dry.The sea may have been refilled by a gigantic 'megaflood' some 5.33 million years ago, according to a new paper in the journal Communications Earth & Environment. The so-called Zanclean Megaflood is thought to have lasted between 2–16 years, with water flowing into the sea at a rate of 60–100 million cubic meters per second.
However, in 2009, scientists found an erosion channel between the Gulf of Cadiz in southern Spain to the Alboran Sea , indicating that a single, rapid flooding event refilled the sea: the Zanclean megaflood. In this new paper, the researchers describe how they have found further evidence for a rapid megaflood in geological features in southeast Sicily.
