Brazilian midfielder Max Alves da Silva said leaving his native country was a difficult choice, but his arrival to the Front Range offers the chance to introduce the 'O Jogo Bonito' style of play to a Rapids franchise that could use a little more elegance.

Futsal is a game designed for players to make the most out of tight spaces.

“I do get inspired by and have got inspired for my position just by watching a lot of Brazilian players,” Alves said through a translator during an interview with The Denver Post. “I watched a lot of Gérson growing up, as well as Pogba and Messi and with that I try to bring some of the things I see to the pitch.

Playing soccer became his avenue to get out of adverse circumstances. He grew up in the favelas of Juiz de Fora, a city in southeastern Brazil. He was one of eight children — three boys and five girls. His father died when Max was just 13 and he eventually decided to leave his mother to support the family. Seeing how hard his mother worked to make ends meet, Max committed himself to the game out of necessity.

He was a youth trialist for Clube Atlético Mineiro, Fluminense and Bahia, three of Brazil’s most historic teams, but was cut by all three. Discouraged, his friends back home told him to keep fighting and playing for his family. He played for Tupi, his local team, in 2019 and finished second in the Minas Gerais state competition, which allowed him to compete in a bigger national Under-20 youth competition.
