Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has voiced his support for President Donald Trump's decision to halt the production of pennies, citing cost savings and environmental benefits. Polis echoed the sentiment expressed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, which highlighted the financial burden of producing pennies. This stance comes amidst growing Democratic frustration with the Trump administration's policies.
Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis expressed his support for President Donald Trump 's decision to order the U.S. Treasury to cease the production of pennies. On Sunday, Trump announced the move via Truth Social, stating that minting new pennies is more costly than the resulting currency. He claimed the action will reduce waste from the federal budget, a goal frequently emphasized by the Trump administration.
'For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents,' he wrote. 'This is so wasteful! I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Let's rip the waste out of our great nation's budget, even if it's a penny at a time.' Polis also highlighted the environmental benefits of eliminating the penny, stating, 'As well as saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, there are major environmental benefits to eliminating the penny. This is a great move.' The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, echoed this sentiment. 'The penny costs over 3 cents to make and cost US taxpayers over $179 million in FY2023,' DOGE wrote. 'The Mint produced over 4.5 billion pennies in FY2023, around 40% of the 11.4 billion coins for circulation produced. Penny (or 3 cents!) for your thoughts.' This stance by Gov. Polis comes amidst widespread Democratic frustration over the Trump administration's early actions. House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., on Monday announced the creation of a new 'rapid response task force and litigation working group' aimed at countering the administration. 'Last year, Republicans repeatedly promised to make life more affordable for everyday Americans,' he wrote in a press release. 'Apparently, they didn’t mean it. House Republicans and the administration have done nothing to lower the high cost of living.' Gov. Polis also voiced disappointment with former President Joe Biden in December over his decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden. 'While as a father I certainly understand President @JoeBiden’s natural desire to help his son by pardoning him, I am disappointed that he put his family ahead of the country,' the governor wrote via X. 'This is a bad precedent that could be abused by later Presidents and will sadly tarnish his reputation,' he added. 'When you become President, your role is Pater familias of the nation. Hunter brought the legal trouble he faced on himself, and one can sympathize with his struggles while also acknowledging that no one is above the law, not a President and not a President’s son.
