A glimpse into the controversial Colony Ridge development in Texas, known for its alleged connection to illegal immigration and cartel activity. The author describes the scene after a recent Department of Homeland Security raid, highlighting the unsettling atmosphere and the complex realities faced by both residents and law enforcement.
Colony Ridge , a Texas housing development suspected of harboring illegal immigrants and cartel activity, was the target of a Department of Homeland Security raid on Monday. My colleague Elizabeth and I ventured into Colony Ridge from Plum Grove, where a murder occurred amidst the federal arrests of roughly 90 alleged illegal immigrant criminals. The sprawling development, located approximately 30 miles northeast of Houston, is a bewildering labyrinth of dead ends and haphazardly placed housing.
It's a perplexing maze; I doubt I could navigate it without a map. We followed Texas Department of Public Safety cruisers into the development, arriving at a scene with two Liberty County Sheriff's cruisers and two unmarked vehicles with flashing lights. At a taco truck with a makeshift bar, we observed four Department of Homeland Security officers conversing with a thin man wearing a 'Honduras' t-shirt next to a van lacking license plates. Attempts to gather information from law enforcement officers were met with curt refusals. The perplexing nature of Colony Ridge arises from its seemingly illogical purpose. It's a sprawling collection of non-uniform housing riddled with dead-end roads, abandoned vehicles partially submerged in wetlands mud, prompting an Environmental Protection Agency investigation. Local business owner George Cuellar expressed bewilderment, stating, 'It makes no sense.' The overwhelming impression is that this massive development was deliberately designed to attract illegal immigrants, offering a haven for them. Another local business owner, Floyd, who operates Fat Floyd’s BBQ, expressed sympathy for the residents, acknowledging their hard work but emphasizing the need to remove criminals. At the taco truck parking lot, the interaction between the DHS officers and the detained man was surprisingly civil, even cordial, with moments of laughter. We noticed a woman and two children, including a young boy in a blue and white Honduras soccer jersey, in the van. We wondered if the family would be separated. However, after much shuffling among law enforcement and some file checks, the family was released, and the police cars dispersed deeper into Colony Ridge. The development, spanning 60 square miles, seemed deserted. There was no activity in the sparse dollar stores, yards, porches, or anywhere else. It felt like a Potemkin village, unreal and staged. While some houses were ramshackle trailers, others were imposing, boasting high gates, barbed wire, and luxury cars in the driveways. American flags were displayed prominently, but they were not the American flag; they were Mexican flags
