Sing Sing explores humanity in hard circumstances.
Summary Sing Sing is a new A24 movie that explores the transformational power of theater for people who are incarcerated. Based on a true story, the movie follows a theater group at Sing Sing prison attempting to put on an original production through the facility's Rehabilitation Through the Arts Program.
Colman Domingo: I think Sing Sing will show people what I've always been interested in, when I was doing work in the theater, as well. I think now I'm on a larger platform and people are noticing what I do, but people will now go backwards and they'll go and see my writing work, or my work with Athol Fugard, or my work with August Wilson, and things like that and will see that I've been really interested in stories like this.
The authentic feeling that it gave me, sitting around having lunch with these guys, them telling stories of what happened to them, how they got incarcerated, meant everything to me. And they shared everything, the things they told me were heartbreaking and motivating and inspiring. So talk about being inspired. And then having Colman on the set, most inspiring actor that we have right now, today. So it was a wonderful experience. These guys are just awe-inspiring.
Brent Buell: Well, I think to make it authentic, to have the real story told. Not to have any of the Hollywood cliches about prison life or anything, but to really tell the stories of these men that I have come to love so much meant everything to me. I didn't want anything other than the truth. And to their great credit, Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley wanted the same thing, and it resulted in the movie that people are seeing.
