An infected cut on his left hand forced Spurs center Zach Collins to undergo surgery Saturday.
The Spurs center underwent surgery last Saturday after a laceration on his left hand became infected.
“All the bad stuff is out of it now, so now I just have to recover from the operation,” Collins said Wednesday. “They had to numb me up pretty good. I wasn’t completely out, but I was pretty loopy and couldn’t feel anything. They went in and pretty much flushed out all the infected stuff that was in the finger and now it is just healing.”“It was ridiculous," he said."I was in the hospital overnight. It was just so much for something so small. It was crazy.
Collins, 25, performed so well after becoming the team’s starting center following the trade-deadline deal that sent Jakob Poeltl to Toronto on Feb. 9 that Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said in Austin he would start at the five spot next season as well.'Neophyte' Dom Barlow, other young Spurs made most of opportunity
It’s an impressive rebound for the 10th overall pick of the 2017 draft after he missed nearly two years between 2019-21 with Portland and the Spurs because of a variety of injuries, including ankle problems that required three surgeries to repair. For the season, Collins averaged 11.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists while shooting 51.8 percent from the field and 37.4 percent from beyond the arc, all career highs.
