AP Top 25 Poll Shakeup: Missouri Jumps 11 Spots, Alabama Rises to No. 6 in Week 5
College Football Week 5, Missouri Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide

Missouri climbed 11 spots to No. 14 after a 45-17 rout of Florida while Alabama moved up to No. 6, as the latest AP Top 25 poll saw significant movement following Week 5 of college football.

The latest AP Top 25 poll delivered significant movement following a Week 5 slate that only featured three matchups between ranked opponents but still produced plenty of drama and reshuffling throughout the rankings.

Missouri and Alabama Lead SEC Reshuffle

Missouri enjoyed the biggest leap of any team, climbing 11 spots to No. 14 after throttling Florida 45-17. The Gators, who looked dominant just a week earlier in their win over Ole Miss, tumbled eight spots after the 28-point loss. Alabama moved up one spot to No. 6 following its dominant performance against Mississippi State, but the Crimson Tide leapfrogged defending national champion Indiana, which dropped one spot despite earning a road win at Rutgers.

Week 5 AP Top 25 poll is a hodgepodge with SEC and Big Ten teams moving every which direction

The Crimson Tide became the first FBS team since Oklahoma in 2019 to score 45 or more points in each of their first five games, and they are averaging 50 points per game this season. If Alabama beats Georgia next week, AP voters could elevate them to No. 1. The top eight teams in the latest poll, including the untouched top five from a week ago, are essentially inarguable at this point.

Beyond that group, things get messy in a hurry, especially among SEC teams. Ole Miss remained at No. 9 while enjoying a much-needed bye week after being embarrassed at Florida. LSU moved up one spot to No. 10 after improving to 4-1 with a win over McNeese. Mississippi State only fell one spot to No. 17 despite losing at home by 33 points to Alabama.

Kentucky may be the most irritated team in the SEC after dropping from No. 24 to unranked despite picking up an overtime win on the road against South Carolina in Week 5. The Wildcats needed a two-point conversion and a comeback to take out the Gamecocks, but remain a 4-1 team that should have seen modest improvement rather than elimination from the rankings.

Big Ten Teams Shift in AP Poll

In the Big Ten, six teams are featured in the latest AP Poll, but USC has reason to feel slighted after dropping six spots to No. 18 despite coming from behind to beat Washington 25-21. The Trojans' defense came through with needed stops and returned a fumble for a touchdown to secure the close home victory.

Oregon moved up five spots despite being off in Week 5, and Iowa received a three-spot bump after losing to Ohio State by 17 points. Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith became the Buckeyes' record holder in receiving touchdowns with 36 grabs in his career after a dominant win at Iowa to improve to 2-0 in Big Ten competition.

However, the Buckeyes could drop given the caliber of Alabama's win. The Buckeyes beat Iowa, which could be enough for pollsters to swap the Hawkeyes for Pitt. The Panthers stayed undefeated with a win at Virginia Tech, even as they face a future without quarterback Mason Heintschel, who tore his ACL in the process.

Miami Notre Dame Georgia and Texas

Miami took care of Clemson in a 41-13 result on the road, which may not be as impressive as it once was, but the Hurricanes' defense did the job despite dealing with injuries. Mark Fletcher spearheaded another strong rushing performance for Miami. Notre Dame had a closer call than expected at North Carolina, as the 21-point favored Irish escaped with an 11-point victory.

CJ Carr was on hand to lead critical touchdown drives when the Domers' defense kept things narrower than anticipated. Georgia had a slow start at home against Vanderbilt, allowing a backup quarterback to lead two long touchdown drives, but the Bulldogs stiffened up in the second half by not allowing any points after the break. The SEC champions go to Alabama next.

Idle this past weekend, Texas could theoretically lose some of its 62 first-place votes to Georgia after the Bulldogs smashed Vanderbilt, but the Longhorns' No. 1 position should not be threatened with that win against Ohio State in their back pocket. Texas Tech is still the top team in the Big 12, but the offense hasn't looked like it, needing a comeback effort to stall an upset bid from Colorado.

The Utes, another idle team on Saturday, have a solid two-touchdown win at Iowa State to their credit and are playing some of the most efficient football in the country. They are likely to be favored in all but one game for the rest of the season. Lane Kiffin's squad predictably smashed McNeese, but the schedule ahead gets much harder.

Mizzou Boise State and Oregon

Off this past weekend, the Rebels are looking to avoid falling under .500 in SEC play as they play Vanderbilt on the road in Week 6. BYU saw an injury to rusher LJ Martin that is worth watching, but Bear Bachmeier ran for two scores to narrowly win at TCU and stay atop the Big 12 standings. Indiana's Turbo Richard went off for 200 yards rushing and the Hoosiers had two 100-yard receivers to dominate Rutgers on the road.

Washington State's Austin Simmons had 340 yards in the air and the Tigers' stout run stop contained the Gators' ground game, rewarding many AP voters' continued faith in Mizzou. DeSean Bishop ran for over 200 yards and three scores to beat Auburn, but the Vols have a big question at quarterback after Faizon Brandon was benched early. Boise State is still likely the class of the Group of Six, although Oregon State has a case.

The Broncos now lead the Pac-12 after a league debut win against Utah State behind a top-25 ranked ground offense. UCLA was off on Saturday and returns for a serious test against Oregon with its undefeated record on the line. The Bruins will face a Ducks team riding high after taking apart USC on the road with backup quarterback Dylan Raiola. Oregon returns from an off week next Saturday in a matchup against newly-ranked UCLA.
