San Diego State first baseman Brian Leonhardt's two-run single provides walkoff win Sunday against Utes

San Diego State first baseman Brian Leonhardt had only a single to show for a weekend of work in the Tony Gwynn Legacy event when he stepped to the plate Sunday against Utah with the game in the balance.

It was a now-or-never moment for the Aztecs, who would have lost had Leonhardt ended the inning with an out. The game was on a time limit — and time was up for starting another inning — because Utah had to catch a plane home. Before the big hit, it had not been a very Gwynn-like weekend for Leonhardt, the SDSU player chosen to wear the Hall of Famer’s No. 19 in Friday night’s 7-1 win over Hawaii. Leonhardt changed all that with one swing.

Players from all six teams in the Tony Gwynn Legacy wore shirt with “Gwynn 19" on the back for Saturday’s games. On Sunday, UNLV chased USD starter Ian Churchill with an eight-run second inning and had a 14-2 lead by the sixth before the Toreros’ offense closed the gap. First baseman Kevin Sim led USD with a home run and five RBIs.

UCSD starting pitchers Matthew Dalquist and Noah Conlon each went six innings in the victories, allowing a combined one earned run. Tritons outfielder Marc Filia had the biggest series on offense.Sea Lions update
