During the college application season, high school seniors face immense pressure to secure spots in competitive colleges. For many Asian American youth, this stress is contributing to a concerning rise in suicide rates, making it the leading cause of death for this demographic between 15 to 24 years old. Suicide rates have doubled from 3.6 to 7.1 per 100,000 between 1999 and 2021, with specific ethnic groups like Korean, Vietnamese, and Southeast Asian youths being disproportionately affected.

However, the pressure to be admitted to a selective college can come with a cost—for some, even their own life, particularly for Asian American youth.Suicide is now the leading cause of death for Asian American youth between 15 to 24 years old.

A 2023 national survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration report found that compared to non-Hispanic white , NH Black or African American , and Hispanic or Latino , only 34.7 percent of Asian Americans with any mental illness received mental health treatment.
