Another long-serving Washington lawmaker, Democratic state Sen. Karen Keiser, announced this week she will not run for re-election.
Washington state Sen. Karen Keiser, who is also the Senate president pro tempore, announced in March 2024 that she will retire later this year.
“I’m not really one to judge, I’m old myself, at this point,” Keiser said with a chuckle. “But I will say that there’s a undercurrent of ageism, which is as much a toxic attitude towards people as any other ‘ism.'” “I do say that we have a wonderful, wonderful new cohort of young and diverse legislators in our state legislature. When I gave my remarks on the floor on the retirement speech, I referred to Peggy Maxi, who was a Black representative — the first Black woman to be elected to the legislature back in 1971. And she was one of only eight women in the entire legislature at that time.
“It was set up so that the lower the income the higher the wage replacement so that people could actually pay the rent,” Keiser noted.
