Allred, who is seeking to out U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, cautioned that a 'balance' should be struck and said he hoped the dispute would be resolved quickly.
U.S. Rep. Colin Allred , the Dallas Democrat challenging U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz , voiced support for striking longshoremen, who he said deserve more of the profits their employers are raking in. But Allred — who was a member of the NFL Players Association during tense negotiations with team owners that led to a lockout 2011 — cautioned that a 'balance' should be struck and said he hoped the dispute that has shut down 36 ports, including the Port of Houston, would be resolved quickly.
Dockworkers join other unions in trying to fend off automation, or minimize the impact 'The people have a right to strike,' Allred said. 'Obviously the timing is difficult, but it always is difficult. And we have seen record profits, and the workers should share that.' His comments came during a meeting with the Houston Chronicle editorial board Tuesday when he was asked about the first dockworker strike since 1977.
Expert explains why panic buying due to port strike is unnecessary The union’s opening offer in the talks was for a 77% pay raise over the six-year life of the contract, with President Harold Daggett saying it’s necessary to make up for inflation and years of small raises. ILA members make a base salary of about $81,000 per year, but some can pull in over $200,000 annually with large amounts of overtime. The union also wants a ban on automated cranes, gates and container-moving trucks.
Sen. Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger Colin Allred will debate in October 'Just like the employer will have a negotiating position, so will the union, and I’m sure they’ll arrive somewhere in the middle,' Allred said. 'That’s the same thing we went through with our collective bargaining with the NFL owners. We had an initial position we knew they weren’t going to accept, but then we used that to get to where we thought it was acceptable.
